Detroit, MI – November 18, 2003 – At some point early in the morning of November 18, 2003, the hit counter on Matthew Loflin Davis' website, www.mldavis.com, surpassed the 1000 mark.
"All I can say is THANK YOU to the people who have been supporting me by visiting the website," said Davis when told of the milestone. "The stone work I've been doing on Belle Isle is an integral part of my artistic vision, and the interest I've seen in it--from people visiting the island, from people coming to my gallery shows, from people commissioning private sculptures--has meant so much to me. I've been so encouraged by the support."
The current version of the site went live on October 24, 2003, which means that the 1000 visitor milestone was reached in less than a month, due in part to the massive media coverage Davis has received.
Vince Cavasin, creator and manager of Davis' site and President of APLAUDD: Art for Public Life And Urban Development in Detroit, encourages people to spread the word: "The press coverage has been great for generating traffic to the site," said Cavasin, "and I think word of mouth has played a big role too. You really have to see Matthew's work to believe it, and if you believe in what Matthew and APLAUDD are doing, please, visit his site, and check out his show at Gallery 4731--you will not be disappointed!"
Matthew Loflin Davis, a well-known Detroit-area sculptor and photographer,
has received overwhelming public support for his work on Belle Isle—so much so
that the Mayor’s office intervened to keep his installation there standing
when the Detroit Recreation department threatened to take it down. Davis has
been featured several times on WJBK Channel 2 news in Detroit, was the subject
of an episode of Art
Beat on WTVS Detroit, and his work has
been covered by WDIV Channel 4 news, the Detroit Free Press, the Ann Arbor News, the Holland
Sentinel,
and other newspapers nationally. Several Detroit-area art lovers have
commissioned him to do stone and metal sculptures.
